Toshiba Readies to Mass Produce Low-Cost Blue Lasers

June 2, 2004...According to a recent report in Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Toshiba Corporation of Japan is about to go into mass production mode of blue lasers saying they can lower to less than 5% of existing devices. Toshiba is in the blue laser camp with NEC competing with those in the Blu-ray disc consortium and Toshiba appears targeted at marketing their version of a new blue recorder in 2005. According to the report, Toshiba claims that they can slash the price of blue lasers to less than 5,000 yen, from about 100,000 yen.
