Mixed Reality Technology
"Canon is developing mixed reality technology, which enables the seamless integration of the virtual and the real worlds in real time. This can be achieved by either of two approaches. One approach involves research being conducted on augmented reality, a technology to augment reality by layering a computer-generated virtual world on top of a reality-based world...One example is Contact Water, which brings augmented reality technology to the world of interactive art. Wearing an HMD and special gloves, the player steps into the game arena, and from above the palm of his/her hands appears water, from which virtual aquatic creatures emerge. By moving his/her hands, the player is able to interactively engage by making the aquatic creatures jump and dance and make other movements."
Contact Water in Action
"Canon is developing technology to seamlessly merge the real and virtual worlds using computers. The objective here is to allow users to experience real-time interaction, from their own viewpoints, with a world that is a fusion of the virtual and the real. Inclusion of real world data in a computer-generated virtual world makes that world more realistic, and is well suited to exhibits in museums and showcases in virtual environments that need to look real."
