Tech Convergence Will Spur Demand for New ADAS Technology

Complex automatic transmissions need expert

"The automatic transmission is one of the most complex parts of the modern automobile and, for a variety of reasons, including the way they are used and often poorly maintained, they do develop faults and eventually wear out.

Dieter Schmitz is senior technician at Mister Transmission in Oakville, Ont., and teaches a course on automatic transmissions at Centennial College in Scarborough. After 20-plus years in the business he's seen it all, including the advent of more gear ratios (now up to seven in Mercedes products) and electronics that have made automatic transmissions more complex and problem diagnosis tougher. 'There's more technology in today's vehicles than it took to put Neil Armstrong on the moon,' he says.

With on-board computers now running both engine and transmission it is not always the transmission that's the cause of a drivability problem.

'If the transmission is slipping, it's slipping, but now we're finding a lot of problems are electrical, electronic or sensor problems,' Schmitz says. 'Electronic components that aren't directly associated with the transmission can have an effect on its operation.'"
