The Top Ten Reasons for Using MEMS in Cell Phones (PDF)

Current display technologies in cell phones include LCDs (the most popular), which require backlights and are difficult to view in sunlight, and transflective displays, which need LEDs and are difficult to view in the dark. Two companies seeking to eventually displace these technologies with MEMS versions include Microvision and Iridigm, although neither of their solutions has been integrated into cell phones yet.

Microvision is currently working with Canon to incorporate its technology into digital cameras (having made great strides in other markets and applications). The incredibly small form factor of Microvision’s optical MEMS makes cell phones a logical next step.
