Kopin and Scalar Bring World's Smallest Video Eyewear to Mobile Video Market
TAUNTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 2005-- Kopin® Corp. (Nasdaq: KOPN - News), the largest U.S. manufacturer of microdisplays for mobile consumer electronics, announced today that Scalar Corporation has integrated Kopin's CyberDisplay® 180K color-filter microdisplay into Scalar's Teleglass, the world's smallest video eyewear for video-on-the-go applications. Scalar, a Tokyo-based manufacturer of optoelectronic equipment, also announced that Teleglass is commercially available on the company's Web site at www.scalar.co.jp/teleglass/index.html.
Here is Kopin's 180,000 pixel display, targeting mobile consumer applications. Kudos to these guys for going to market with their LCD-based microdisplay. Someone has to go out there and prove that this market exists -- that people will wear video eyewear in the first place.
Kopin is looking good with their $373M market cap, a little more than 3 times what Microvision is worth. Being from Massachusetts myself, I wish these guys luck in their efforts to market consumer head-mounted displays. But there's one little fly in the ointment for them...
Microvision's LED widescreen display has 50 times the resolution of Kopin's LCD-based microdisplay.
Kopin has the first-mover advantage and I am sure that everyone at Microvision will follow their progress closely. Let them venture forth to see what the market really looks like. What kinds of devices and capabilities really appeal to people. Then...BAM! Hit the market with the 9M pixel LED widescreen display and send the LCD makers back home crying to mama.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Just 2 days til the annual meeting. Looking forward to meeting some of you there!

BJ, I guess we'll know we've arrived when we have an ad for a product showing up in the google ads. Seems like sooner or later that has to happen to the world leader in retinal scanning displays. Who's second?
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work or we'll never know.
