The Seeds Of The Next Big Thing

The technology economy has shown pronounced growth cycles over the past 50 years, alternating with periods of technology digestion when growth slows. We are in such a digestion period right now; history strongly suggests that another growth wave of IT innovation will begin in 2007 or 2008. The seeds of that next wave are all around us; Forrester's research agenda is focused on four important themes in technology development and deployment that will accelerate the growth of the tech economy in the coming years.

THE FOURTH WAVE: IT EVERYWHERE

As these four domains evolve, mature, and converge, the fourth wave of innovation and growth for the technology economy forms. Bring them together, and we will get IT everywhere. Digital business architecture makes IT infrastructure more flexible, robust, and extensible — in short, ready for the demands of computing applications that range well beyond satisfying the information needs of corporate workers. Extended Internet technologies take computing beyond computers to products and people. The social computing phenomenon pushes computing into consumers’ lives and into society at large. And Innovation Networks is the new market structure that will push IT beyond the developed world, making it a truly global phenomenon for the first time in its history.

Although you have to register at Forrester.com to read the entire article, I highly recommend it. These are people who are paid well to consider where technology is taking business and society -- you can tell, because this is good stuff. If IT is going to be everywhere, then displays have to be everywhere too. And they're not going to be 2" cell phone screens for long. Have a great 4th of July!!!
