Tech Convergence Will Spur Demand for New ADAS Technology

Microvision Picoprojector Shown at CES

iSuppli: Rear projectors driven by LED light sources, lasers show their colors at CES

Highlighting the miniaturization enabled by the small laser arrays, Novalux collaborated with Microvision, which has developed a MEMS-based scanner for near-eye displays, to produce what may be the smallest front-projection system ever developed. The device is roughly two cubic inches in size, and puts out an estimated 25 lumens, about the same as many of the significantly larger LED-based pocket projectors.

It certainly seems possible to make the device even smaller, which would open up the possibility of projectors integrated into cameras, camcorders, portable media players and even mobile phones.

These new technology developments could contribute to a much-needed boost for the projection business, which has weathered some difficult times recently, due to intense competition in the front-projection market, and an attack by large LCD and PDP (plasma display panel) sets in the RPTV market.
