Improving our Air Force with the HoloLens 2
By A1C Andrea Rozoto, 366 Fighter Wing Public Affairs / Published August 05, 2021
MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho --
The 366th Fighter Wing Air Force Repair Enhancement Program (AFREP) technicians now have the HoloLens 2. This is a wireless head mounted augmented reality device that allows service members to touch, grasp and move holograms like it is a real object.
“You are able to view your environment while seeing interactive holograms in front of you,” said Tech. Sgt. Darius Shirts, 366th Munitions Squadron AFREP technician.
There are no wires holding the user back, which allows them to move freely. The user can also connect with service members at another location so they can see what the user is viewing and interact from their desktops.
“Essentially we can connect with engineers across the Air Force through Microsoft Teams to receive real time feedback and support from subject matter experts (SME) without paying to actually bring them here,” said Shirts. “The engineer can circle a part you are looking at from their desktop so you can see exactly what they are talking about instead of them explaining its location.”
AFREP had the opportunity to put it to use to upgrade 138 circuit boards to enhance the capabilities of our aircraft.
“We were able to use the headset to call engineers at Robins Air Force Base to do these modifications,” Shirts explained. ”This saved the wing time and money since we didn’t have to bring these engineers here to this base.”
The HoloLens is user friendly and calibrated from person to person.
“User familiarization is highly recommended and can be completed within a few hours,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Webb, 366th Fighter Wing A4 contract officer representative.
Extensive training isn't required to be able to communicate with other SME’s making the HoloLens 2 a valuable resource to the 366th Fighter Wing mission saving time, money and so much more.
“So far, it has only been used in the maintenance complex on Mountain Home AFB but the possibilities are endless.” Webb said.
